The Kurdish languages (also Kurdî or کوردی, pronounced as [ku:’rdi:] in Kurdish) are several Iranian languages from the Indo-European family, spoken by the Kurds in western Asia (Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Armenia and Azerbaijan), of which Kurmanji Kurdish has the largest number of speakers, the other varieties being Sorani, Laki and Kermanshahi. Today, however, Kurdish is an official language only in Iraq. It is written using four different writing systems, depending on the geographic region.
